Do men have challenges that can be shared in therapy? This together with “is therapy only for “weak” or “crazy” people?” are questions that both men and women ask themselves, because men are perceived to have all it takes to solve life difficulties. However, regular counseling sessions, which is a tool for personal growth and self-improvement, can enable men improve their relationships, manage stress more effectively, and rediscover personal potentials thus leading to a renewed sense of well-being.

Myths around men and therapy

Men don’t want therapy.

Therapists don’t understand men’s issues

Therapy is only for women

Only people with serious issues need therapy

Men should just tough it out. Therapy takes too long to show results. Therapy is a sign of weakness

However, here are some facts about men seeking therapy;

Recent survey suggests that, over 14% of men experience some type of mental health challenges during their life. This is an indication that men equally require professional therapy since mental health is as important as physical health or any other health.

Culturally, men have few acceptable emotional outlets thus they often struggle to find a safe, judgement-free place to express and share their experiences. Therapy is safe and completely confidential, and can quickly become a comfortable place for men.

Also, Men can benefit from therapy just as much as women, children, young adults and the aged. Attending professional therapy often leads to a man’s ability to recognize self-worth and creates confidence.

Likewise, attending therapy for the first time may seem intimidating, but many men feel comfortable in therapy and find it helpful.

Examples of issues that men can take for professional counselling include; stress, relationship issues, personal growth challenges, lack of purpose or meaning in life, loneliness, difficulties at work, financial strain, loss of any kind e.g. death of a loved one, career related issues, major changes in life just to mention a few.

Is there unique therapy for men?

There could be programs or strategies that maybe unique to men just like there are for children, young adults and the aged or any other group. However, the basic principles of counselling remain similar to all clients across all issues that affect human beings.

You can attend counselling sessions as an individual, a couple, a family or a group of men who are experiencing a common issue.

Arguably, it is not easy to be a man today since everyone expects you to be tough but also emotionally available, a provider and also present. That’s a confusing road to walk alone. Therapy is the best place to get a clearer map.

Try not to give up, it is doable.

I totally concur, men are human beings with limitations, and need for support once in a while. It takes a courageous man to swim against the cultural norms and seek counselling. Without courage, Man gets overwhelmed and goes under 😭✈️

Men need therapy just like women. There many situations that are not explained to men yet they are supposed to handle it ‘manly’ .
Keep up the good work 💪🏾

Men are going through alot in secret and don’t want to share, they think therapy is exposing there issues. How I pray they can be open and seek therapy.

In my opinion i think men who seek therapy are the strongest. With therapy you get a man who is self developed emotionally, cognitively, financially ans generally psychologically. I think this type of man has healthy relationships intrarelationships and interrelationships
